This is how your coffee cools down the longer it’s left out - the heat from the coffee flows into the room. He recognized that heat from a body at a high temperature would flow to one at a lower temperature. Clausius was oblivious to Carnot’s work but hit on the same ideas.Ĭlausius studied the conversion of heat into work. I say attributed because it was a young French engineer, Sadi Carnot (1796–1832), who first hit on the idea of thermodynamic efficiency however, the idea was so foreign to people at the time that it had little impact. The identification of entropy is attributed to Rudolf Clausius (1822–1888), a German mathematician and physicist. Let’s take a look at what entropy is, why it occurs, and whether or not we can prevent it. Zoom out a lot further, and we see the entire universe marching towards a collapse. Zoom out a little, and businesses are failing, crimes and revolutions are occurring, and relationships are ending. Cells within your body are dying and degrading, an employee or coworker is making a mistake, the floor is getting dusty, and the heat from your coffee is spreading out. Thy hand, great Anarch! lets the curtain fall Īnd universal darkness buries all.” - Alexander Pope, The DunciadĪs you read this article, entropy is all around you. Lo! thy dread empire, Chaos! is restored Nor human spark is left, nor glimpse divine! “Nor public flame, nor private, dares to shine The Greek root of the word translates to “a turning towards transformation” - with that transformation being chaos. In short, we can define entropy as a measure of the disorder of the universe, on both a macro and a microscopic level. The more disordered something is, the more entropic we consider it. Energy disperses, and systems dissolve into chaos. Left unchecked disorder increases over time. In fact, you can think of it as nature’s tax. More specifically, the second law of thermodynamics states that “as one goes forward in time, the net entropy (degree of disorder) of any isolated or closed system will always increase (or at least stay the same).” Įntropy is simply a measure of disorder and affects all aspects of our daily lives. Entropy, a measure of disorder, explains why life seems to get more, not less, complicated as time goes on.Īll things trend toward disorder.
I know of polygamists families in the following places-all have the same fundamental beliefs of Mormonism (Joseph Smith, restored priesthood, Book of Mormon, living prophet, and eternal families) Where have you seen or heard reliable evidence of polygamists in recent years, let's say past 20 to present? multiple splinter groups and silent practitioners have developed since that policy change resulting in an estimate of over 40,000 polygamists, primarily in the Mormon corridor. I know this practice became illegal in in the state of Utah in 1890 and became a cause for excommunication from the Brighamite branch of the LDS church in the early 1920's. The pop music machine is ripe for parody-and not just the Weird Al kind. As the series progresses, Erin and her oddball cousin Orla’s (Louisa Harland) adult relatives become increasingly central, yielding many side-splitting tiffs between Erin’s dad (Tommy Tiernan) and the father-in-law (Ian McElhinney) who despises him. Saoirse-Monica Jackson is effervescent as the clique’s controlling alpha, Erin, and fans of Bridgertonwill be sure to appreciate Nicola Coughlan’s performance as sweet, timid, studious Clare. There are older brothers in prison and hopeful visits from then-President Bill Clinton, but more prominent in Derry Girls are the title characters themselves-four lively teens in school uniforms, plus bad-girl Michelle’s (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) newly arrived English cousin James (Dylan Llewellyn), who’s been enrolled in Our Lady Immaculate College because he might not survive an Irish boys school. Add to that tone the developmentally appropriate self-centeredness of high schoolers, the rapid-fire banter of a working-class extended family living in close quarters, and the local Catholic girls school’s autocratic-nun headmistress, one Sister George Michael (the uproarious Siobhán McSweeney), and you get an extremely funny show that unfolds in a singularly somber time and place. But there’s such a thing as gallows humor, and it’s something at which the Irish particularly excel. Northern Ireland in the mid-1990s, when the Troubles raged into their fourth decade and many Catholics struggled with both British oppression and their misgivings about IRA violence, might not seem like an obvious setting for a lighthearted teen comedy. Co-creator Nick Kroll voices a character based on his preteen self as part of a dream cast that includes John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, and, in the Emmy-winning role of Connie the Hormone Monstress, Maya Rudolph. So far, it’s taken on everything from anxiety and depression to bisexuality and “hand stuff,” never shying away from the awkward, gross, or potentially shameful. Taking full advantage of the cartoon medium to tell stories that would’ve been too wild for a live-action cast of child actors, the show imagines pubescent psyches under siege by “hormone monsters” and other invisible creatures that personify intense emotions and primal urges. Since Hulu’s wonderful Pen15 graduated from TV last year, Big Mouth has been both the uncontested standout among coming-of-age raunch comedies and one of the very best titles to come out of the current glut of adult animation. Puberty is inherently funny (once you get over the trauma of your own middle-school years, anyway), so it’s only natural that it would become a fertile topic for sitcoms. You won’t find sketch comedy like this on SNL, which, incidentally, has gone 48 seasons without naming a Black woman head writer. And every episode is stuffed with A-list guests, from Angela Bassett and Ava DuVernay to several stars of executive producer Issa Rae’s Insecure. There are pseudo-academic conspiracy theorists, ball-culture competitions for funeral guests and “basics,” The Purge but for returning ineffective hair-care products for a full refund. The sensibility is slightly surreal, and the perspective is, as the title promises, explicitly Black and female. In the three seasons that have aired so far, a core troupe composed of Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend (who replaced season 1 co-star Quinta Brunson after she left to create Abbott Elementary) have parodied everything from spy thrillers to family reunions. As an alternative, consider the other contender: Robin Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, which is strictly no skips. Only two titles earned Emmy nominations in this year’s Outstanding Variety Sketch Series category, and, well, the wrong one-a certain half-century-old network stalwart that is now lucky to get two funny scenarios into the same episode-won. As before, HDFS will store the file as 16 blocks. Imagine now the file is a gzip-compressed file whose compressed size is 1 GB. With an HDFS block size of 64 MB, the file will be stored as 16 blocks, and a MapReduce job using this file as input will create 16 input splits, each processed independently as input to a separate map task. Consider an uncompressed file stored in HDFS whose size is 1 GB. When considering how to compress data that will be processed by MapReduce, it is important to understand whether the compression format supports splitting. Snappy is also significantly faster than LZO for decompression.ģ. LZO and Snappy, on the other hand, both optimize for speed and are around an order of magnitude faster than gzip, but compress less effectively. Bzip2’s decompression speed is faster than its compression speed, but it is still slower than the other formats. Bzip2 compresses more effectively than gzip, but is slower. Gzip is a general purpose compressor, and sits in the middle of the space/time trade-off. The different tools have very different compression characteristics. The tools listed in above table typically give some control over this trade-off at compression time by offering nine different options: –1 means optimize for speed and -9 means optimize for space. Snappy is widely used inside Google, in everything from BigTable and MapReduce to our internal RPC systems.Īll compression algorithms exhibit a space/time trade-off: faster compression and decompression speeds usually come at the expense of smaller space savings. On a single core of a Core i7 processor in 64-bit mode, Snappy compresses at about 250 MB/sec or more and decompresses at about 500 MB/sec or more. For instance, compared to the fastest mode of zlib, Snappy is an order of magnitude faster for most inputs, but the resulting compressed files are anywhere from 20% to 100% bigger. It does not aim for maximum compression, or compatibility with any other compression library instead, it aims for very high speeds and reasonable compression. Snappy is a compression/decompression library. But that is still 20-50% of the size of the files without any compression at all, which means that IO-bound jobs complete the map phase about four times faster. It doesn’t compress quite as well as gzip - expect files that are on the order of 50% larger than their gzipped version. Moreover, it was designed with speed in mind: it decompresses about twice as fast as gzip, meaning it’s fast enough to keep up with hard drive read speeds. The LZO compression format is composed of many smaller (~256K) blocks of compressed data, allowing jobs to be split along block boundaries. It typically compresses files to within 10% to 15% of the best available techniques (the PPM family of statistical compressors), whilst being around twice as fast at compression and six times faster at decompression. gzip is based on the DEFLATE algorithm, which is a combination of LZ77 and Huffman Coding.īzip2 is a freely available, patent free (see below), high-quality data compressor. Since the map output is written to disk and transferred across the network to the reducer nodes, by using a fast compressor such as LZO or Snappy, you can get performance gains simply because the volume of data to transfer is reduced. Therefore, it is necessary to compress the output before storing on HDFS.Įven if your MapReduce application reads and writes uncompressed data, it may benefit from compressing the intermediate output of the map phase. However, these history files may not be used very frequently, resulting in a waste of HDFS space. If the amount of output per day is extensive, and we often need to store history results for future use, then these accumulated results will take extensive amount of HDFS space. Often we need to store the output as history files. gz can be identified as gzip-compressed file and thus read with GzipCodec. If the input files are compressed, they will be decompressed automatically as they are read by MapReduce, using the filename extension to determine which codec to use. This time conservation is beneficial to the performance of job execution. If the input file is compressed, then the bytes read in from HDFS is reduced, which means less time to read data. So what was supposed to be an enjoyable 3 days at the beach, became a very bad experience. Again, we could have made it work, but with no A/C and no working refrigerator, it was impossible. The rooms were actually quite nice, but a little deceiving in the pictures. My family can live without TV and internet. If the A/C and refrigerator would have worked, we would have gladly stayed there. I can't even say he got the letter because Brian told me to send it to the hotel and he would forward to him. The next day, AAA called trying to get our money back. Lauren came up to our room and she saw everything we were complaining about and agreed we could not stay there. He would not refund our money and the best he would do is only charge us for one night if we left immediately. We just wanted our money back and wanted to move on to another place. Lauren was the bright spot of the whole horrible event. The final straw came at 10:30 PM and we went down to the front office to try to resolve. In addition, but these seem like small things, TV's worked intermittently, WiFi did not work (Manager told us to just keep trying), no elevator to 3rd floor (try lugging suitcases for 6 people up 3 flights of stairs in over 100 degree weather). We left to go to dinner and when we returned, A/C was not working at all, the refrigerator was not working and our room smelled like a garbage can because our food in the refrigerator was going bad. Manager, Brian, told him to find a new unit. Maintenance guy came in to ask about A/C problem in Room 330. When we tried to check in, the manager insisted we had booked 2 suites and wanted to charge me. It was July 4th week and my family just wanted to spend a few days at the beach. More Show lessįrom the moment we arrived, I had a bad feeling. The staff I encountered were friendly and the manager was very accommodating. Relaxing, dining and a lot of free entertainment thrown in. The shuttle runs straight down into the center of town and runs quite frequently and only costs $1 one way. Plus, getting to entertainment is easy if you're up for a stroll, or you can catch a shuttle right outside the Clipper. This suited me just fine since I would rather rest up in the quiet than try to rest with a whole lot of noise. It's right across the street from the beach/boardwalk, although at the quiet end. The pool is small, but if you plan to be on the beach a lot, then it's not a big deal. The rooms were clean and well-stocked with towels, and cleaned on a regular basis. Even with that, it wasn't too inconvenient since the vanity was a nice size with plenty of room for storing your toiletries. The only drawback was a small bathroom, and the vanity was outside the bathroom. It is literally across the street from the beach and the price was reasonable considering its location. The best part about the RC is its location. Stayed at the Royal Clipper Inn and Suites the week of 8/20/12. |
